CHALLENGE:

  • Literacy rates in Harlem have not changed in over 40 years

  • 80% of Harlem schools do not have libraries.

  • Harlem children are physically located in 'proximity to power' with Columbia University and Teachers College, however are not given the tools necessary to obtain power.

GOAL:

  • To support the efforts of established community leaders working to raise consciousness around Harlem literacy.

  • To compliment current efforts to raise consciousness around Harlem literacy.

  • To prototype a summer creative arts for literacy program in coalition with those leading the charge to address Harlem literacy.
